A California jewelry store owner’s husband used his personal firearm to stop three armed robbers who threatened their store Monday night.
Security camera footage posted by KTVU on YouTube shows the trio of masked, armed robbers entering the Plaza Jewelers store in Menlo Park. The first gunman points a shotgun at one customer who immediately gets on the ground.
Two other customers also get on the ground when two more armed robbers enter the store. Eight seconds after the gunmen entered the store, the store owner’s husband, Alfonso Angulo, opened fire.
The security video shows the intruders falling over each other as they panic and flee the store empty-handed.
KRON4 reported that the armed robbers were demanding cash and jewelry when Angulo stepped in, using his personal handgun to protect his customers and his wife’s store.
Angulo told KTVU that while he was scared, his instinct was to defend his store because he did not know if the armed robbers would return.
“In that moment, you get scared but you have to act and defend what’s yours,” Angulo said, as reported by NBC Bay Area. “If we didn’t have a gun, they would’ve taken everything.”
Police said no arrests have been made, including the store owner, who fired at least one shot at the armed robbers. Angulo has had a concealed weapon permit for nearly a decade.
The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.
Anyone with information about the attempted robbery is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at (650) 363-4911 or an anonymous tip line at (800) 547-2700.
Last month, an armed Lyft driver with a concealed carry gun permit in Philadelphia, Pa., fought back against a pair of carjacking suspects who shot at him and tried to run him over, CBS Philly reported.
The Lyft driver, identified by police as a 38-year-old male, was driving when he was rammed from behind twice by a Honda Accord. After the Lyft driver got out of his 2011 Infiniti, one of the carjacking suspects exited the Honda and approached with a shotgun. Fox News reported the armed suspect fired the shotgun and then took over the Lyft driver’s vehicle.
The Lyft driver, who has a valid permit to carry, used his personal gun to shoot at the armed suspect, striking him.
The second carjacking suspect, who was driving the Honda, then attempted to hit the Lyft driver with his car. The Lyft driver was able to avoid being hit and fired again, striking the second suspect.
