A Boston bouncer is accused of fatally stabbing a Marine who was in the city to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day weekend, according to police.

Boston Police on Monday arrested 39-year-old East Boston man Alvaro Larrama, and charged him with murder. The bouncer at Sons of Boston pub pleaded not guilty during his arraignment, and he was held without bail.

The victim has been identified as 23-year-old Daniel Martinez, of Illinois. Martinez was a Marine who finished his active duty last year as a sergeant. His awards included the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.

Martinez was visiting friends in the Boston area over the weekend when he went out to Sons of Boston pub to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

Martinez was inside the bar with a friend, and there hadn’t been a problem, Suffolk County District Attorney prosecutors said based on video surveillance. Then, Martinez and his friend left for a bit before getting back in line to enter the bar.

While standing in line, Martinez and Larrama apparently had an argument. Martinez then began walking away, and Larrama chased after him, the prosecutors said. The bouncer then attacked Martinez and stabbed him.

Larrama went inside the bar after the stabbing, washing his hands and turning his shirt inside out, prosecutors said. The bouncer then left the pub through the back door.

Police officers responded to Union Street at about 6:53 p.m. on Saturday for a report of a person stabbed. Upon arrival, officers found Martinez suffering from an apparent stab wound.

Martinez, suffering life-threatening injuries, was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:24 a.m. Sunday.

All of the popular bars along Union Street near Faneuil Hall downtown were shut down after the fatal stabbing.

Detectives assigned to the Boston Police Homicide Unit conducted an investigation, which resulted in the identification of Larrama as the suspect. Larrama was identified by his co-workers.

The father of four who previously served time around 2001 surrendered himself to Boston Police on Monday, and was taken into custody without incident.

Larrama will be back in court on April 28 for a probable cause hearing.
