Several people were shot and undetonated explosives were found at a Brooklyn subway station on Tuesday, according to fire department and law enforcement sources who spoke to the New York Times, NBC New York and the Associated Press.

The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) said it responded to reports of smoke at the 36th Street and Fourth Avenue station at around 8:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday. There, FDNY members reportedly found multiple victims of possible gunshot wounds. An FDNY spokesperson told the Associated Press they found undetonated devices while responding to the call.

An NYPD source told the Associated Press they were responding to reports of people wounded either by gunfire or an explosion.

The New York Post shared photos from the subway station, showing multiple people lying bloodied on the ground, and tweeted, “NYPD investigating possible explosion in Brooklyn subway station during morning rush hour.”

A law enforcement official told the New York Times that preliminary reports indicate five people were shot. The official said police are on the lookout for a suspect with a gas mask and an orange construction vest.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) has told people to avoid the area around the subway station.
