A Center Point man has been indicted in a 2021 traffic crash that killed an 83-year-old man.
Jarvis Antonio Jones, 41, is charged with manslaughter, according to court records made public Monday. Killed in the crash was Donald Mahoney of Birmingham.
The crash happened Saturday, May 29, 2021, at 10:41 a.m. on U.S. 280 at Dunnavant Valley Road. Alabama State Troopers at the time said Jones was driving a 2015 Volkswagen Passat that struck a 2006 Scion XB driven by Mahoney.
The indictment said Jones “did recklessly cause the death” of Mahoney but does not provide additional details as to what led to the criminal charges.
Jones was booked into the Shelby County Jail Sunday and remains held on $75,000 bond.
According to Mahoney’s obituary, he served in the U.S. Air Force as an air traffic controller in Thailand during the Vietnam War, leaving the service at the rank of Captain. He lived much of his life in Safety Harbor, Florida, working in management at Florida Power and eventually retiring from Verizon.
His interests included music, literature, gardening, and curating Irish poetry and folk songs.
