On Thursday, a San Antonio, Texas homeowner fatally shot an intruder at her home while her three children were home. Days earlier, a Canton, Texas homeowner told police he fatally shot an armed intruder who tried to forcefully enter his home on Saturday.
The Thursday shooting took place in San Antonio’s Southeast Side around 10 p.m. in the Kashmuir Place and Kellis Avenue neighborhood, News 4 San Antonio reported. Police believe the suspected home invader entered the home through a backdoor laundry room and was trying to break into the main door leading into the home when the female homeowner shot him twice in the chest.
The unidentified suspect was taken to a hospital where he died of his injuries.
There were three children in the home at the time of the Thursday shooting incident but neither they nor the armed homeowner was injured.
The armed homeowner is not facing any charges at this time. “Castle Doctrine” in her jurisdiction generally allows a person to use force against someone who is unlawfully and forcefully entering their home, vehicle or place of work.
Days earlier, Canton Police responded to an emergency call at around 12:30 a.m. on Saturday KLTV reported. Upon arriving, officers found 51-year-old Erik J. Hicks in the residence with multiple apparent gunshot wounds.
Authorities took Hicks to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Canton Police Department and the Texas Rangers are jointly investigating the shooting and have, thus far, determined Hicks had unlawfully forced his way into the home and had confronted the homeowner with a handgun. Investigators believe the homeowner retrieved his own handgun and shot Hicks multiple times.
The homeowner has not been charged, but the case will be referred to a grand jury in Van Zandt County at the conclusion of the investigation.
