An active shooter was reported at a nuclear power plant in Hanford, Washington on Tuesday, forcing the facility to go into lockdown.
In an initial statement, the nuclear power plant said, “Due to a report of shots fired, employees in the 2750 E Building in the 200-East Area are being evacuated. Hanford Patrol is on the scene. There is no confirmation of shots fired at this time. Affected employees and employees in the nearby buildings should continue to lockdown.”
The nuclear power plant said in a subsequent post that Hanford Patrol continues to search the building but “They have not found any evidence of shots fired, and have not found any injured employees.”
Following the initial report of an active shooter, the Tri-City Herald reported a gun, possibly a rifle, was found inside a vehicle in the area, though it was unclear if the finding was related to the active shooter alert.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE), Richland Operations Office is currently monitoring the situation.
