“Top Gun: Maverick,” the long-awaited and repeatedly delayed sequel to the 1986 Tom Cruise aviation classic “Top Gun” is set to hit theaters on May 27. Pop music star Lady Gaga wrote the theme song for the highly-anticipated film and Tuesday she released the track, titled “Hold My Hand.”

Here are the lyrics to Gaga’s new song:

To tell me you need me

Hold my hand, everything will be okay
I heard from the heavens that clouds have been grey
Pull me close, wrap me in your aching arms
I see that you’re hurtin’, why’d you take so long

To tell me you need me? I see that you’re bleeding
You don’t need to show me again
But if you decide to, I’ll ride in this life with you
I won’t let go ’til the end

So cry tonight
But don’t you let go of my hand
You can cry every last tear
I won’t leave ’til I understand
Promise me, just hold my hand

Raise your head, look into my wishful eyes
That fear that’s inside you will lift, give it time
I can see everything you’re blind to now
Your prayers will be answered, let God whisper how

To tell me you need me, I see that you’re bleeding
You don’t need to show me again
But if you decide to, I’ll ride in this life with you
I won’t let go ’til the end

So cry tonight
But don’t you let go of my hand
You can cry every last tear
I won’t leave ’til I understand
Promise you’ll just hold my hand

Hold my hand, hold my—
Hold my hand, my hand
I’ll be right here, hold my hand
Hold my hand, hold my—
Hold my hand, my hand
I’ll be right here, hold my hand

I know you’re scared and your pain is imperfect
But don’t you give up on yourself
I’ve heard a story, a girl, she once told me
That I would be happy again

Hold my hand
Hold my hand
Hold my hand, hold my hand
Hold my hand, hold my hand
Hold my hand
I heard from the heavens

According to Insider, Gaga is a fan of the original film and was one of many artists and labels who put their names forward to record the theme song for the sequel.

“Top Gun: Maverick” director Joseph Kosinski told Insider he had some concerns about how Gaga’s song would turn out.

“It was nerve-racking to hear that song for the first time,” Kosinski said while recalling hearing a demo of the track while sitting next to “Top Gun” franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer. “We went over to the record label, and you’re almost afraid you’re not going to like it, because how do you say no thank you to Lady Gaga?”

“As soon as we heard the song it was like, wow, that is a classic melody,” Kosinski said. “That is fantastic. Even in demo form.”

In an interview with “The Late Late Show with James Corden,” Cruise said Gaga’s song became the “heartbeat of our film” and helped shape the film’s score.

Cruise said described how he and composer Hans Zimmer were working on the score of the film and trying to find the exact right feel for the movie.

“There was just a sound and something we were looking for and it just wasn’t right,” Cruise said. “She presented her song to us and it just opened up the whole movie.”
