Pro-abortion protesters swarmed the homes of Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh on Saturday and may have broken federal law in the process.
The protests came days after Politico published a leaked Supreme Court draft opinion showing a majority of the justices voted in favor of overruling the landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court case, which determined the Constitution protects pregnant women seeking abortions.
On Saturday, Daily Signal producer Douglas Blair tweeted, “The marchers have made it to what appears to be Justice Kavanaugh’s house.”
Police officers could be seen standing on the sidewalk in front of a house as protesters walked by and shouted chants, including, “we will not go back.”
“The energy is markedly more negative outside Kavanaugh’s house,” Blair said in a second tweet. “The anger has become much more palpable than outside any other justices’ house.”
Protests outside the Supreme Court Justices’ homes could violate federal law. 18 U.S.C. § 1507 prohibits “pickets or parades” in or near a building housing a court of the United States, or in or near a building or residence occupied by a judge, juror, witness, or court officer “with the intent of interfering with, obstructing, or impeding the administration of justice, or with the intent of influencing” any of those individuals. Violators of the law can be fined and face up to a year of imprisonment.
Another Twitter user shared a video taken from within the crowd, with the caption “Back at Kavanaugh’s house. #BansOffOurBodies.”
That same Twitter user tweeted, “We also stopped at Chief Justice Roberts’ house. #BansOffOurBodies.” Video taken outside the Roberts’ home showed protestors chanting “the whole world is watching.”
Police officers could also be seen standing outside Roberts’ purported home.
“The scene in front of Chief Justice John Roberts’ house,” Blair tweeted, with a video showing the crowds gathered in the streets. In the video, protestors could be heard chanting, “Keep abortions safe and legal” and someone drew a pair of coat hangar on the street in chalk.
A woman in the crowd could be seen holding a sign that said, “It’s never been about ‘babies’ – It’s about stealing our BODILY AUTONOMY.”
“Here at Justice Kavanaugh’s house where the protest seems to have mostly cleared out,” Daily Wire correspondent Mary Margaret Olohan tweeted on Saturday. “Protestors arguing with police who are telling them to get out of the street.”
“Strong police presence here. They tell me maybe 50-100 people showed up and marched to both Kavanaugh’s and Robert’s homes,” Olohan said in a second tweet. “Not clear whether Justice Kavanaugh and his family are home but the lights are all on.”
On Monday morning, nearly two full days after the protests outside Kavanaugh and Roberts’ homes, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki tweeted, “[email protected] strongly believes in the Constitutional right to protest. But that should never include violence, threats, or vandalism. Judges perform an incredibly important function in our society, and they must be able to do their jobs without concern for their personal safety.”
On Tuesday, May 3, Roberts issued a statement confirming the authenticity of the leaked draft opinion published by Politico. Roberts said, “To the extent this betrayal of the confidences of the Court was intended to undermine the integrity of our operations, it will not succeed. The work of the Court will not be affected in any way.”
Roberts also announced on Tuesday that he had directed the Marshall of the Court to investigate the leak of the draft opinion.
