‘Uberization’ of broadcast news threatens longtime standards
Portland broadcast news has a legacy of professionalism, setting the standard for the industry. But a new trend in amateur journalism is threatening safety, jobs and the overall quality of reporting in the city and its surrounding communities, all for the sake of corporate profits. The future of the industry will be discussed at a town hall meeting on July 27 to decide whether we will “Uberize” the news or trust the professionals that now do their job so well.
Portland’s neighbors to the north in the Seattle City Council have already recognized the threat of this attempt at de-professionalization and passed a resolution to protect the integrity of broadcast journalism in their city. Wednesday’s town hall will be the first step in establishing those protections in Portland.
Rep. Lew Frederick of the Oregon State Legislature will be speaking, along with representatives from local labor groups and other community activists.
